What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy involves another woman carrying and giving birth to a baby for the intended parents. In the UK, only altruistic surrogacy is legal — paying a surrogate beyond reasonable expenses is not permitted.
Gestational surrogacy (the most common form) uses IVF to create an embryo from the intended parents' or donors' eggs and sperm, which is then transferred to the surrogate. The surrogate has no genetic link to the child. A parental order is required after birth to transfer legal parenthood.
Who is Surrogacy for?
Surrogacy is pursued by women who cannot carry a pregnancy (absent or malformed uterus, medical conditions making pregnancy dangerous), male same-sex couples, and single men wishing to become parents.
Surrogacy costs
In the UK, surrogacy costs vary widely: £15,000–£25,000 in reasonable expenses to the surrogate, plus IVF costs (£5,000–£10,000 per cycle), legal fees (£5,000–£10,000), and agency fees if using one. Total costs typically range from £25,000–£50,000.
