What is Donor Eggs?
Donor egg IVF uses eggs from a donor, which are fertilised with the intended parent's or donor's sperm and transferred to the recipient's womb.
The egg donor undergoes ovarian stimulation and egg collection. The recipient's cycle is synchronised using hormones. Retrieved eggs are fertilised (usually via ICSI) and the embryo is transferred to the recipient. UK donors can be known or anonymous, though since 2005 donor-conceived individuals can access identifying information about their donor at age 18.
Who is Donor Eggs for?
Donor eggs are used when a woman cannot use her own eggs — due to premature ovarian failure, repeated IVF failure, genetic conditions, or age-related decline in egg quality. Success rates with donor eggs are typically much higher than with own eggs for women over 40.
Donor Eggs costs
Donor egg IVF in the UK costs £6,000–£12,000, which includes donor compensation, screening, and the IVF procedure. Waiting lists for UK donors can be long — some clinics have waits of 6-12 months.
