What is PGT?
PGT (pre-implantation genetic testing) screens embryos for genetic abnormalities before transfer, helping select the healthiest embryo for the best chance of a successful pregnancy.
During an IVF cycle, embryos are biopsied on day 5 or 6 — a few cells are removed from the trophectoderm (outer layer). These cells are analysed for chromosomal abnormalities (PGT-A), specific genetic conditions (PGT-M), or structural chromosomal rearrangements (PGT-SR). Only genetically normal embryos are transferred.
Who is PGT for?
PGT-A is recommended for women over 37, those with recurrent miscarriage, or after repeated IVF failure. PGT-M is used when one or both parents carry a known genetic condition (e.g., cystic fibrosis, sickle cell). PGT-SR is for carriers of chromosomal translocations.
PGT costs
PGT adds £2,000–£4,000 on top of the IVF cost, depending on the number of embryos tested. Most clinics charge a base fee plus a per-embryo fee (£200–£400 each). It's one of the more expensive add-ons but has strong clinical evidence.
